Upcoming Seminar - Adaptive Land use for Flood Alleviation: Implications & opportunities for river managers (12th & 13th October 2010, Appleby, UK)

The Eden Rivers Trust is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the Association of Rivers Trust’s Autumn Seminar; “Adaptive Land use for Flood Alleviation: implications and opportunities for river managers” this October in the UK. This is held in partnership with the ALFA project and is partly funded under the INTERREG IVB North West Europe programme.

The two-day event including speakers, a field visit and an awards dinner, will be held on the 12th and 13th October 2010 in the historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria.

Papers will be presented on the very latest research and advice about adapting land use to alleviate flooding and climate change impacts on our rivers. Topics will include the impact of flooding on river ecology, tools for understanding natural river processes, managing sediment in rivers, balancing nature and agriculture in flood risk areas, ecosystem services and best practice case studies.

This will be the first time the Association’s seminar programme has focused directly on flooding and Lucy Dugdale, ERT Scientific Officer says; “We hope the event will be a real opportunity for river trusts and others involved in river management and conservation to come together and examine some of the challenges we now face as a result of flooding and climate change. I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the very practical solutions which have been and could be delivered by river trusts in the UK”.

Key speakers at the event will include scientists from Durham University who have been developing innovative ways of investigating whether measures such as woodland planting, re-routing river channels, putting woody material back into rivers and reducing soil compaction could help reduce downstream flood risk and, if so, where these measures should be implemented in a river catchment area. The results of their research in relation to the River Eden will be presented at the event.

The seminar is open to all individuals and organisations involved in, or wanting to learn more about, practical river management. For more information please send us an e-mail. An on-line booking facility will be available on the website of the Association of Rivers Trusts from mid-August.
